Hey there, babe!  It’s that time again, or maybe for you it’s the first time that you are purchasing a wig. I know, I know, so many choices, so little time.You’re doing all of this research to see which wig works best for you. What length should you get? What texture works best? How much density do you need? What is the best type of lace to get?

Thinking about all this when trying to select your wig can definitely lead to overwhelm. Let’s just take a few minutes tho today to focus specifically on the types of lace. There are many options to choose from but for this article we are going to focus on the three we find to be the most popular. The three we will discuss are Swiss lace, transparent lace, and HD lace.

We will look at the types individually in more detail as well as some pros and cons of each type. Each lace is unique with its advantages and disadvantages and may be suitable for for different types of wig wearers and different circumstances, so we will discuss this as well. All right ladies so let’s dive in!

1 SWISS:

Swiss lace is the most common type of lace used in wigs for a number of reasons. First is the fact that It’s more affordable to produce for manufacturers. Also, your Swiss lace is more durable than HD lace. Even so, it is soft, smooth and provides air circulation so that the scalp can breathe. 

Application of this type lace is pretty easy even if you are a beginner. Swiss lace comes in a variety of colors, which allows you to match it to your personal skin tone. The shades range from light brown, medium brown, and dark brown. Wigs made with Swiss lace are the more affordable for those with a minimal budget.

2 TRANSPARENT:

As the name suggests, the lace is transparent but not physically. Its transparency is a representation of its actual color. Unlike Swiss lace that comes in a variety of colors transparent lace is just that, transparent. This lace is also somewhat soft in texture and easy to apply but is also one of the most durable lace options.

In reference to its color transparent lace is often easier to blend to “melt” on people with lighter skin tones. However, you can use foundation, concealer, or lace tint spray to change the lace to the shade that you need.

3 HD:

HD lace is finer, softer, and thinner than Swiss and transparent lace. For this reason HD lace is easier to damage and rip than the other lace options. Extra care should also be taken care when you do plan to bleach the knots or color the hair especially near the roots. Due to its delicate nature and high quality, HD lace wigs, frontals, and closures are typically more expensive.

This lace does appear more natural and undetectable in regards to the hairline when installed. Also due to its fragile nature you won’t typically find full lace wigs made from HD lace. They are mostly found on lace frontal wigs and/or on closure wigs. 

You will find HD lace mostly worn by celebrities and A-listers who can afford them. If you are trying to “give scalp” or want the ultimate “melt down”, as the girls say, HD lace would be the way to go.  

How To Choose the Right Lace:

Yeah, Mo I hear you. Yada yada yada, What lace do I need? 

I got you! Choosing the right lace depends first the results that you want, second your budget, and third the maintenance you’re willing to put in as well as your life style.

If you want the most natural looking hairline possible for your wig, you don’t mind replacing your lace more often and know how to handle it gently and with care, then HD lace would be best. But remember it has a higher price tag and it doesn’t last as long.

If your budget is a determining factor and you want something that looks natural and is easy to apply, durable and you have a lighter skin tone, transparent lace might be the move. Remember even if your skin has darker tones the lace can be tinter darker. These are good for a person who may be wearing a wig long term and using adhesives.

If you are looking for a natural-looking wig and would like the lace in a color that’s already close to skin, is more durable than HD and easy to install Swiss lace will work as well.
*Super important tip, you CAN NOT lighten dark lace. If you order lace that is pre colored and it is too dark you will always be able to see a line of demarkation at your hair line. Be careful when ordering this type of lace. Know what color lace you need before you order.
